A Phenomenal Company

As you know, over the last several months I have been working to transition my day to day duties at MCG so I can spend more time mentoring and advising people.  As part of that I have been able to work with Kevin Carpenter from our parent company to help him gain an understanding of the unique and special culture we have here at MCG.  Kevin has spent a lot of time getting to know our company and over the last two weeks he has spent one on one time with each of our leadership people.  As he was flying back to New Jersey tonight he sent me an awesome email.  In the email he shared the following quote:

“An organization that is healthy will inevitably get smarter over time.  That’s because people in a healthy organization, beginning with the leaders, learn from one another, identify critical issues, and recover quickly from mistakes.  Without politics and confusion getting in their way, they cycle through problems and rally around solutions much faster than dysfunctional and political rivals do. Moreover, they create environments in which employees do the same.”  -Patrick Lencioni

Kevin then commented:  “This is what I observed at MCG over the last two weeks”

What a fabulous compliment!  And I couldn’t agree with him more.  Each of the leaders and employees cultivate that environment at MCG.  It took many years and a lot of growing pains to get our company to this point, but the culture defined in the quote above is exactly the culture that exists today, and it is that culture that has led to our success as an organization.  It is also that culture that has helped each employee to grow and succeed as individuals.

Kevin went on to share another quote from Patrick Lencioni:

“The same phenomenon can be seen in families.  Healthy families – the ones where parents give their children discipline, affection, and time – almost always improve over the years, even when they lack many of the advantages and resources that money can buy.  Unhealthy families, the ones without discipline and unconditional love, will always struggle, even if they have all  the money, tutors, coaches, and technology they could ever want.

The key ingredient for improvement and success is not access to knowledge or resources, as helpful as those things may be.  It’s really about the health of the environment.  And consider this: if you had to bet on the future of one of two kids, one raised by loving parents in a solid home and the other a product of apathy and dysfunction, you’d always take the former regardless of the resources surrounding them.   Well, the same is true in organizations.”

Kevin went on to comment:  “This is the kind of environment I was raised in and I think it is very true.   Easier to succeed and flourish in a healthy environment.”

I asked Kevin’s permission to share his comments with all of you.  He said it was okay for me to share it and then he stated:

“I meant it as a compliment to you, the MCG leadership team, and all the employees.  You have built a great company.”

What a great tribute to MCG and the great people working here.  Kevin is a great person and he was very generous to have shared his insights regarding his impressions of MCG with us.  Kevin values the culture we have built and he is excited to continue learning more about how we have been able to create such a unique environment and how we have attracted such a unique team so that he can replicate that culture in other organizations.

I want to add to Kevin’s comments just how much of an honor it is to be associated with the amazing leaders and employees at MCG every day.  I have had the honor to lead the team for the last nine years and it has been a blessing every day which allowed me to learn and grow from the incredible people in the company.  It is so rare to work with a group of people that are so aligned in their values and their vision for helping each other become the very best that they can be.  Watching coworkers lift one another up both in their jobs as well as in their personal lives is inspiring.  I am excited to see what great things my team will do in the future.  Transitioning on to do other things is such a bitter sweet time for me.  I am so excited to focus my time on giving back to others, but I also feel like the proud momma who is watching her baby grow up and go to college…she is proud of her child, but she will miss him every day….that is the best way to describe the emotions  I feel about my employees…like I am their proud momma :).  Very proud.

Today’s blog is dedicated to the great people that have impacted my life so profoundly all these years and who have helped me to build a phenomenal company.  Thank you for allowing me to lead you.  It is an honor that I will never forget.

Have a Fabulous Friday!

~Amy

Amy, I love your blog. Iran from you every time I read it. You have a gift for reaching out and building others and it is so evident in everything you write. I can’t believe you have accomplished so much in your short lifetime. Your greatest achievement though, is raising Ashley and Dalton..two very wonderful human beings!

Amy, it’s so nice to hear an outside perspective on our company—and how Kevin viewed our team so positively. I have to say, that it is also incredibly nice of him to take time out of his schedule to so eloquently share his thoughts about our performance. That acknowledgement is a powerful motivator and an excellent way to wrap up a work week! Thanks for sharing with us!

  • Aaron Bangerter says:

What a beautiful illustration of the culture of MediConnect.

This week was my five year anniversary with the company and it has caused me to pause and reflect on my perspective of the organization as a whole over the past five years.

MediConnect has a select group of supreme leaders that have put their heart and soul into making MediConnect become what it is today. I love the comparison to family – at a similar angle, in a family each person has their own unique personality and set of talents; the presence of each member makes up the family as a whole.

This is how I view the leadership team at MediConnect. We have been fortunate to have a set of leaders; each leader being an expert that is passionate about the success of their respective field. Each leader has shared a common vision of success for MediConnect for which Amy planted the seed. Each one of them have put their heart and soul into making this vision become a reality. Over time, this ethic has been passed down to each employee which has caused us to become an absolute power surge of success. MediConnect is more than just a job; it is a product of many late hours of hard work. It is the product of the good feeling that comes from making decisions based on integrity and doing what is right. It is the product of crunching numbers until that final beautiful moment where all of the figures match up perfectly and the hard work pays off. It is the product of helping people and providing true value to our customers. It is the product of caring about the quality of our service. It is the product of doing whatever it takes to accomplish our goal. From the example of Amy and our leaders, each of us have done what it takes and now, here we are.

In the past five years I have seen this culture develop before my eyes. I can’t express how much it means for Kevin form our parent company to recognize and appreciate our culture and value for all that it is worth.

Amy, my hat is off to you. You built this organization into what it is today. You were the seed of the vision for what this company has become and it all started with you. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to be a part of this phenomenal company. We will miss you greatly when you leave, but rest assured that you have developed this culture and have made an impact on this organization that will never be taken away. The knowledge that you have accomplished such a vision has to be the most rewarding birthday present ever. 😉 Happy Birthday, Amy.

An intriguing discussion is worth comment. I think that you ought
to publish more about this subject, it might not be a taboo
subject but usually people don’t talk about such topics.
    To the next! Many thanks!!
