All The Things You’re Not

You are not your age,

Nor the size of clothes you wear,

You are not a weight,

Or the colour of your hair.

You are not your name,

Or the dimples in your cheeks,

You are all the books you read,

And all the words you speak.

You are your croaky morning voice,

And the smiles you try to hide,

You’re the sweetness in your laughter,

And every tear you’ve cried.

You’re the songs you sing so loudly,

When you know you’re all alone,

You’re the places that you’ve been to,

And the one that you call home.

You’re the things that you believe in,

And the people that you love.

You’re the photos in your bedroom,

And the future you dream of.

You’re made of so much beauty,

But it seems that you forgot,

When you decided that you were defined,

By all the things you’re not.

When I read this poem for the first time I immediately read it again to really contemplate its meaning. It really got to me. So often in life I find myself getting all worried about my wrinkles, or my weight, or how an outfit looks…I think a lot of us do that….we worry about our exterior self instead of loving our interior self. Let’s face it, it’s an easy trap to fall into. We are surrounded by advertisements and tv shows with perfect looking people who never have a hair out of place, but we forget that those people have an entire crew of make-up artists and stylists whose entire job is to blot each shiny spot before we the viewers can see it. But we have to find ways to remind ourselves what we really are – a beautiful person on the inside where it really counts and where no amount of time can make it less beautiful…in fact I would argue that with age comes wisdom and wisdom makes us even more beautiful on the inside…

I don’t know who “e.h” is that wrote that poem, but whoever you are, Thank You! Thank you for reminding me that we are not defined by the outside and we should love ourselves for our inside!

Have a beautiful day all and remember, YOU’RE GORGEOUS!
