Focus on what you can control

Focus on what you can control, not what you can’t. We only have so much energy to expend each day and every second we waste focusing on things we have absolutely no control over we are wasting that energy and our time. Instead we need to put our entire attention toward focusing on the things we can control.

I went down to speak at Brigham Young University today to the Women MBA students. When I left the event I spent time with a young lady who has been struggling with feeling overwhelmed and coping with anxiety. As we talked the best advice I could give her was to put all of her effort into those things she can control in her life. If there is action she can take that makes something improve then do it. If there is nothing she can do to improve or fix something then it’s time to stop worrying about it and just trust that if she has done her best then God will help take care of the rest. The best thing she can spend her time and energy is by working toward the things she can impact for the better and take action on those areas. And move forward allowing herself to be happy!

We can expend a tremendous amount of our energy on things that take us nowhere, do nothing, and make no difference if we allow ourselves to. But why would we ever want to do that?! We have a finite number of hours in the day, so just think how much more successful our lives will be if we commit to not wasting one second of time worrying about anything we can’t impact for the better. And on the flip side, if we spend every waking moment focused on doing things that improve our situation the results will be amazing.

If you are depressed you are living in the past.

If you are anxious you are living in the future.

If you are at peace you are living in the present.

                                                      -Lao Tzu

Do the best you can with your present. That is all God wants from us. He doesn’t expect perfection. He expects our best effort. So give Him that and then trust that He is handling the rest. And remember, He is better than handling it than you are anyway…so LET HIM!

Have a great day and BE HAPPY!
