“If you knew how much work went into it, you wouldn`t call it genius.”

I love that quote by Michelangelo! It is so true that the great work of this world is not done by geniuses, but by ordinary men and women that are simply hard working and dedicated and who strive to achieve extraordinary things.

We are in the final week of completing the construction of our new home.  The result is incredible…breathtaking.  It’s funny because when we take people through the house to see it as we are finishing construction several have mentioned the genius that went into the home, yet when they say that I immediately want to recite that Michelangelo quote:  “If you knew how much work went into it, you wouldn`t call it genius.”   This last year and a half of building this house has been an all-consuming effort to say the least. It has been more hours than I could have ever imagined.  The level of detail is so tremendous and painstaking that it is mind boggling.  The number of decisions that have had to be made every single day on everything from furnaces, to hinges on doors, to light fixtures, to insulation, to the color of grout to use between tiles.  It is truly a crazy endeavor to just plan the house out let alone build it.  It has felt like being sucked into a dark abyss of despair in a never ending construction nightmare.

But tonight we have finally reached the point where we are starting to see the faint light at the end of the tunnel.  The light is still about a month away, but at least we see the glimmer of light off in the distance for the very first time.  As my husband and I sat down after another long day he looked over to me and said, “I feel like when the house is done I won’t even know who I am anymore…all I am is this house every day!”  I totally understand that feeling…we have been so buried in the house that it’s hard to remember what our life was like before we started this project.  The thought of coming home and not having to order anything, decide anything, blue tape anything is a magical dream!

The funny thing about life is that the projects that are the most difficult, the projects that we dump our heart and soul and energy into, the projects that make us the most stressed out and miserable – those typically end up being the projects that mean the most to us when we complete them.  Those end up being the projects that make us proud and give us that moment for others to think we are a genius….so let’s just keep it between us that it isn’t genius at all, just a ton of really hard work!  That can stay our little secret 🙂

Have an amazing day and remember that the harder the project today the more genius you become!  🙂
