Make The Best Of The Way Things Turn Out

As I sit here at the hospital tonight, following my daughters second ACL surgery that took place earlier today, I am trying to reflect on what lessons I have learned in my life today so I can share those thoughts with all of you.  It’s funny how just sitting around in a hospital waiting room all day while you wait for your child to get out of surgery can cause you to be totally and completely exhausted.  But that is exactly what I am feeling tonight, exhausted.  I suppose that comes from sitting in worry for hours on end as your little baby (yes she is 17 but she is still my baby girl!) is out of view and all you can do is wait to see if she is okay.  It’s amazing how much you can love another human being when they are your child. It truly is.

I am so grateful that my daughter’s surgery went well and that she awoke okay from her anesthesia, especially after the last surgery when she had to go on the breathing machine because they couldn’t get her to wake up on her own.  This time went much more smoothly and once she was awake from surgery she immediately wanted her cell phone so she could post a photo of her in her hospital bed to post on instagram to let her friends know she was out of surgery and okay.  That’s when I knew she was going to be just fine.  They have kept her pretty doped up since the procedure to help regulate her pain.  But all in all she is doing as well as could be expected and I have made the little couch in her room into a bed to sleep on so I can stay with her tonight.  If all goes well through the night they will let us go home tomorrow to the rented hospital bed waiting for her there.  They need her to stay in bed for the next 7-10 days so we have once again turned the family room into as much of a bedroom as possible with plenty of rented movies to try and keep her entertained while she is stuck in bed.

Tonight she showed me a picture she created herself using a quote she found and placing it on one of her favorite pictures. It’s a picture she then posted on her facebook wall.  She said it will be her theme quote for going through this trial:

things turn out best

“Things turn out best for those who make the best of the way things turn out.”  What a perfect quote for any of us who are going through a hard time of any kind.  I absolutely love it and I am going to write it up on my mirror in my bathroom at home so I am reminded of it every day.   It is perfect!  And so that is the lesson I am reminded of today – I am reminded that its up to us to make the best of things of every situation life gives us.  Sometimes its hard to do.  Sometimes things are scary or sad or frustrating in life and you just want to curl up in a ball and cry…I know because I have felt like that the last few days…but thank heavens for people like Ashley that remind me that curling up in a ball does nothing to make things better – the best way to make things better is to DECIDE TO!  It not about what life deals you – it’s about how you deal with the hand you are dealt.  We have to choose to make the best of things.  We have to choose to be positive and charge forward doing the very best we can to do make things better.  We have to make the very best of the way things turn out.  So that is my lesson I am learning today – to choose to make the best of whatever is going on in our life right now.

Have a great day tomorrow everyone! And thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you who have given prayers and support to my family. You bless our lives tremendously.

With love,

~Amy

Amen. And you have those same feelings for your grandchildren. Surely hope her recovery is speedy- and as pain-free as possible.
