The Service You’ve Given Mankind

Supposing today were your last day on earth,

The last mile of the journey you’ve trod;

After all of your struggles, how much are you worth,

How much can you take home to God?

Don’t count as possessions your silver and gold,

Tomorrow you leave these behind,

And all that is yours to have and to hold

Is the service you’ve given mankind.

I thought this poem was a perfect way to start off our week with because it reminds us to focus our efforts this week on doing acts of service to others. Now before you get all stressed out thinking this is just going to add one more thing to your long list of to-do’s this week…well, it will add to your to-do list, but the pay-off for doing this particular to-do will be far greater than the pay-off you’ll get for any other one…

Doing acts of service doesn’t have to be a major time sucker, and it doesn’t have to be difficult to accomplish. It can be something as small as saying “Good morning!” and smiling at someone. It can be as small as paying for the fast food of the person in line behind you at the drive-up window, or paying the toll for the car behind you on the freeway. It can be putting a post-it note with a positive message on someone’s office or car door. It can be sending a text to say “I’m thinking about you today” when you know someone is struggling.

All I know is that there is no greater way to jump start your own happiness on any given day then to do one of these small acts of service for someone else. It has an incredible way of making you yourself feel a million times happier.

“Realize that true happiness lies within you. Waste no time and effort searching for peace and contentment and joy in the world outside. Remember that there is no happiness in having or in getting, but only in giving. Reach out. Share. Smile. Hug. Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself. “   – Og Mandino

So go pour some perfume on others so you can smell sweet yourself..after all, “all that is yours to have and to hold is the service you’ve given mankind.”

Have a great one! ~Amy
