You’ll Know It When You Find It

“Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love…Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know it when you find it.”  – Steve Jobs

As I’m giving lectures at different Universities and sharing with students how I’d started a healthcare technology company at a young age, students often comment on how lucky I am to have found success in a field I was passionate about, healthcare.  I tell them that it wasn’t actually that I was passionate about healthcare starting out, it was just that I happened to have gotten jobs working in healthcare during high school and college and it just so happened that I learned I had a talent for designing software so I put the two things together and started a healthcare technology company. Because you see, that was my real passion – being able to take care of my family.  So I was taking what I knew (healthcare) and what I had a talent for (designing software) and using them as a means to support my family – and that was my great work.

I grew to love healthcare and technology because that’s what I was putting my heart into – and when we put our heart into something we gain a passion for it. So to all the young people who are struggling to identify their passion – know this – the passion doesn’t have to be specific to one field or another going into it – your passion should be to make a good living so you can provide for yourself and your family, in which case you can really choose any career that will allow you to do so. And the best way to ensure success in any field is to choose a focus that allows you to utilize your natural abilities and God-given talents. Then get busy and go to work. Put your heart into everything you do on the job, giving 100% even to the smallest tasks. Do that and you will find that the more you put your heart into your work the more your passion for what you are doing will grow.

And never forget that the greatest work you will ever do is in taking care of your family.
