And for those of us who are women, we are our own worst critic times ten!

I have always been a fan of motivation speaker Brian Tracy. In one of his talk series that is a personal favorite of mine called The Psychology of Achievement, he talked about improving our self-image by looking in the mirror each morning and saying “I like myself” and repeating it over and over again each day. When I first heard his advice I thought to myself, “there is no way I would ever do that”. The thought of doing it alone made me feel ridiculous. But the more I considered the message of his words the more I began to understand the importance of the exercise he was suggesting. I began to see that he was trying to help us come recognize that far too many of us don’t like ourselves very much and that is a major obstacle that holds us back from becoming successful in life. Which means we have to get to a point that we really do like ourselves if we want to become our very best selves and accomplish all that we are capable of.

When that frame of reference came together for me I decided that maybe it wasn’t so silly to do something as basic as looking in the mirror each morning and say “I like myself…I like myself…” over and over. I started to put little notes to myself on my mirror reminding myself that I was capable and that I had the ability to succeed at most anything I put my mind to. And I began amassing a hearty collection of Wonder Woman memorabilia to tell myself I was Wonder Woman if I choose to be which also did wonders for helping me learn to like myself. 🙂

I’ve also learned that if you do find yourself thinking bad thoughts about yourself try adding the words “up until now” to the end of your negative thought. That will serve as a good reminder that you always have the power to change whatever you aren’t happy with and STARTING NOW now it is only going to get better from here.

Commit that starting today you’ll stop being so hard on yourself. Each morning look in the mirror and say “I like myself…I like myself!” And keep saying it as many times as it takes to mean it!

Have a great day everyone! And for the record – YOU ARE AMAZING AND BRILLIANT!

~Amy Rees Anderson (author of the book “What Awesome Looks Like: How To Excel in Business & Life” )

We all tend to be our own worst critics in life.
