{"id":2611,"date":"2013-03-05T23:02:02","date_gmt":"2013-03-06T05:02:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.amyreesanderson.com\/blog\/?p=2611"},"modified":"2013-03-05T23:02:34","modified_gmt":"2013-03-06T05:02:34","slug":"be-the-master-of-your-emotions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amyreesanderson.com\/blog\/be-the-master-of-your-emotions\/","title":{"rendered":"Be The Master Of Your Emotions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I sit down to write my blog every night I try and look back at my day and ask myself \u201cwhat lessons did I learn today that I can share with others?\u201d so I can write about those lessons and know that something good can come from my challenges I go through.\u00a0 I have asked myself that question now for over 3 \u00bd years every single day before I write my blog.\u00a0 It has been really interesting to stop and do that every night because it really forces me to look at everything I went through in that day in order to figure out what God wanted me to learn from the challenges and difficulties I faced.\u00a0 Knowing I have to write about it each night really forces me to figure it out first, otherwise I would have nothing that I could share with all of you.\u00a0 I am incredibly grateful that this blog has forced me to go through that exercise because I know that a million lessons would have passed me by if I wasn\u2019t forced to recognize them and acknowledge them.\u00a0 The fact is that it\u2019s an exercise well worth doing each day for yourself, even if you don\u2019t write a blog about it \u2013 just force yourself to take a few minutes and the end of each day to look back and try to see what you were supposed to learn from today\u2019s experiences.\u00a0 \u00a0You will be amazed at how much it will open your perspective and help you to grow.<\/p>\n<p>So what did I learn today?<\/p>\n<p>Well, the truth is that today was stressful.\u00a0 There is just no other way to describe it.\u00a0 I am trying to juggle a bunch of really important things like doing my year-end tax stuff (arggghhh), finalize the plans for the new house (holy overwhelming), hire the team that will build it for us (scary to do), keep up with the REES Capital meetings (way behind on these), handle the IPOP Foundation setup structure for my charity (talk about complicated rules and restrictions\u2026), and respond to everyone\u2019s requests for time and attention (totally and utterly impossible!).\u00a0 It was just a crazy stressful day today and it wore me out.<\/p>\n<p>So I came home and went through my normal routine of asking \u201cwhat was I supposed to learn from my day today?\u201d \u00a0That\u2019s when it hit me \u2013 today I was supposed to learn to master my emotions.\u00a0 When things get stressful and I feel overwhelmed, I need to practice focusing on the positives and not letting myself feel buried. I need to remind myself to just do the best I can and take things one step at a time. I can\u2019t eat the entire elephant at once, but I can take one bite at a time and continually move forward. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I know from past experience that I have the power to control my emotions by simply controlling my thoughts.\u00a0 It 100% works and I have experienced it time and time again in my life.\u00a0 If I change my thought process in my head it will change the anxiety and stress in the rest of my body.\u00a0 If I change my thoughts I will change my emotions.\u00a0 It\u2019s that simple.<\/p>\n<p>No, today I didn\u2019t do so well with controlling my thoughts or my emotions.\u00a0 But tonight as I reflect back I see my mistake and I know how to fix it.\u00a0 So I am learning from that mistake and that is what matters most.\u00a0 Today I kept focusing on what <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">wasn\u2019t<\/span> done and I wasn\u2019t recognizing what I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">was<\/span> getting accomplished.\u00a0 Today I was allowing the thoughts in my head to focus on how \u201cstressed\u201d I was, instead of controlling my thoughts and pointing them toward the happy and exciting things happening.\u00a0 Today I simply didn\u2019t do well controlling my thoughts, and as a result I was completely stressed out.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The lesson from today is that we need to master our emotions, and all we have to do to make that happen is to control our thoughts.\u00a0 Focus on the positive things.\u00a0 Focus on taking things one step at a time, doing the best you can do, and then let that be enough.\u00a0 Be proud of yourself for giving a full effort.\u00a0 Be happy that you are learning and growing and becoming a better person through every experience you have.\u00a0 Master your emotions!<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0A great quote to remember is this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">\u00a0&#8220;If I feel depressed I will sing. If I feel sad I will laugh. If I feel ill I will double my labor. If I feel fear I will plunge ahead. If I feel inferior I will wear new garments. If I feel uncertain I will raise my voice. If I feel poverty I will think of wealth to come. If I feel incompetent I will think of past success. If I feel insignificant I will remember my goals.
