{"id":3313,"date":"2013-06-24T22:19:04","date_gmt":"2013-06-25T04:19:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.amyreesanderson.com\/blog\/?p=3313"},"modified":"2013-06-24T22:19:20","modified_gmt":"2013-06-25T04:19:20","slug":"be-a-bridge-builder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amyreesanderson.com\/blog\/be-a-bridge-builder\/","title":{"rendered":"Be a Bridge Builder"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Bridge Builder\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>(by Will Allen Dromgoole)<\/p>\n<p>An old man, going a lone highway, Came at the evening cold and gray<br \/>\nTo a chasm vast and deep and wide<br \/>\nThrough which was flowing a swollen tide.<br \/>\nThe old man crossed in the twilight dim;<br \/>\nThe rapids held no fears for him.<br \/>\nBut he turned when safe on the other side<br \/>\nAnd built a bridge to span the tide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOld man,\u201d cried a fellow pilgrim near,<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019re wasting your time in building here.<br \/>\nYour journey will end with the closing day;<br \/>\nYou never again will pass this way.<br \/>\nYou have crossed the chasm deep and wide;<br \/>\nWhy build you this bridge at even-tide?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The builder lifted his old gray head.<br \/>\n\u201cGood friend, in the path I have come,\u201d he said,<br \/>\n\u201cThere follows after me today<br \/>\nA youth whose feet must pass this way.<br \/>\nThis stream, which has been as naught to me,<br \/>\nTo that fair youth may a pitfall be.<br \/>\nHe too must cross in the twilight dim \u2014<br \/>\nGood friend, I am building this bridge for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is one of my favorite poems in life.\u00a0 I just love love love the message of this poem.\u00a0 It serves as such a great reminder that as we go through this life we shouldn\u2019t just focus on ourselves and what we can accomplish, we should also stop and look back to figure out how we can make life\u2019s journey better for those who come behind us.\u00a0 The man in the poem had succeeded in his own journey but rather than just continuing forward he recognized the responsibility to stop and build a bridge so that the people who would travel that road after him would have an easier route they could take.\u00a0 If each of us would be willing to do that in this life, take the life lessons we have learned and the challenges we navigated through and use them to benefit others, it would have a hugely positive impact on all who come behind us.\u00a0 The ripple effect for good would be tremendous.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s challenge for me and for all of us is to look for ways to become a bridge builder!\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Have a great day everyone!<\/p>\n<p>~Amy<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Bridge Builder\u00a0\u00a0 (by Will Allen Dromgoole) An old man, going a lone highway, Came at the evening cold and gray To a chasm vast and deep and wide Through which was flowing a swollen tide.
