This poem was written over a hundred years ago but its message is still relevant to all of us today:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Worth While<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 by Ella Wheeler Wilcox<\/p>\n<p>It is easy enough to be pleasant,<br \/>\nWhen life flows by like a song,<br \/>\nBut the man worth while is one who will smile,<br \/>\nWhen everything goes dead wrong.<br \/>\nFor the test of the heart is trouble,<br \/>\nAnd it always comes with the years,<br \/>\nAnd the smile that is worth the praises of earth<br \/>\nIs the smile that shines through tears.<\/p>\n<p>It is easy enough to be prudent,<br \/>\nWhen nothing tempts you to stray,<br \/>\nWhen without or within no voice of sin<br \/>\nIs luring your soul away;<br \/>\nBut it\u2019s only a negative virtue<br \/>\nUntil it is tried by fire,<br \/>\nAnd the life that is worth the honor on earth<br \/>\nIs the one that resists desire.<\/p>\n<p>By the cynic, the sad, the fallen,<br \/>\nWho had no strength for the strife,<br \/>\nThe world\u2019s highway is cumbered to-day,<br \/>\nThey make up the sum of life.<br \/>\nBut the virtue that conquers passion,<br \/>\nAnd the sorrow that hides in a smile,<br \/>\nIt is these that are worth the homage on earth<br \/>\nFor we find them but once in a while.<\/p>\n<p>(Poems of sentiment by Ella Wheeler Wilcox. It&#8217;s totally true that it is easy to be happy when life is going good and it is easy to behave yourself when you aren&#8217;t facing any temptations, but it takes real strength of character and courage to smile through the tough times and to do the right thing when you are surrounded by temptations to do the wrong thing.
