Last week my family and I were at the lake with our friends and my husband and I offered to teach those who had never surfed behind a ski boat before how to surf. Several people\u2019s first response was to voice \u201cI can\u2019t do that\u201d. However, it wasn\u2019t because they were incapable of doing it \u2013 it was simply because they hadn\u2019t ever done it before \u2013 but there initial reaction to trying something new was to immediately think \u201cI can\u2019t do that\u201d.<\/p>\n
When there is something new to take on in any aspect of our life there is often an immediate tendency to think \u201cI can\u2019t do that\u201d\u2026but we need to recognize that 90% of the time that thought comes from the fact that we haven\u2019t done it before \u2013 not the fact that we are genuinely incapable of doing it.<\/p>\n
Person after person on the boat trip, including the younger children with us, agreed to try to surf behind the boat – and sure enough, every single one of them was able to accomplish it! And not only did they accomplish it, they loved it! How awesome is it that they didn\u2019t listen to their doubts\u2026and how awesome is it that they were willing to give it a try?!<\/p>\n
None of us should ever assume we aren\u2019t capable of doing something just because we haven\u2019t done it before. The truth is that we will never know what we are capable of until we actually try. And just like it took some people three or four or even more attempts than that at surfing before they were able to actually get up on the board and do it\u2026sometimes we just need to give it a few more attempts in order to be able to accomplish it. The most important thing is never to rule it out before we have even given it a fair try.<\/p>\n
We are all capable of doing extraordinary things in life. But we will never discover what those are until we stop ourselves from thinking \u201cI can\u2019t do that\u201d\u2026.Instead, remind yourself: \u201cJust because I haven\u2019t done it yet, doesn\u2019t mean I can\u2019t do it!\u201d You simply haven\u2019t done it YET!<\/u><\/p>\n
