I thought I would be spending the last few weeks doing Christmas shopping and preparing for the holidays and trying to wrap things up at work so I can take time off for the Christmas holiday break.

But so far I haven’t had time to do any Christmas shopping, I haven’t gotten anything prepared for the holiday and I haven’t been able to touch my normal stack of work emails or things to be done because I have been spending all of my time on something I never would have imagined I’d be spending my time doing…Just when I thought my life was becoming a little more predictable it has become anything but.

I’ve been spending all of my time trying to help fix something. It isn’t my job to fix it and I’m not at all responsible for fixing it, so then why the heck am I spending so much time trying to fix it?! Yeah, that’s the question I have been asking myself…

And then I remember a quote that reads:

“Almost every successful person begins with two beliefs: the future can be better than the present, and I have the power to make it so.”

Trust me when I say there are times that I really wish I didn’t see things the way the quote expresses, but the fact is that whenever I see something that truly matters not working properly and I know I have the skills and ability to fix it, I simply can’t help myself …I can’t walk away from it until I have first given it all I’ve got to try and fix it and make it right again…although sometimes I really wish I could just shrug my shoulders and walk away, but I can’t…it’s just not in me to do that.

I’ve also found that when you find yourself walking down a particular road in life that you never expected to and after you have worked your guys out to get to the end of that road where things are fixed you inevitably find yourself reaching the end of the road facing a fork ahead, and now you must decide whether you will now take the road to the left or the road to the right… because heaven knows you aren’t capable of standing still. You have exhausted the road leading up to this fork and now it’s time to choose.

It’s usually when you get to that point where you are at the end of a long road and you are facing a fork you become keenly aware that:

“When you least expect it something happens that makes you realize that God’s up to something.”

God’s definitely been up to something in my life lately because he’s brought me down an unexpected road and I am ready to choose which way to go. I recognize that once I pick whether I will turn right or left that I will be leaving this road behind me, but as Socrates once said, “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”

Don’t be afraid of leaving a road you’ve come down behind. Rest assured that you did all you could do there. It is now time to turn your attention to what lies ahead…there is a new road ahead with incredible beauty to be seen, and you just never know what exciting places this new road is going to take you to next!

Make your choice and start walking…. 🙂

~Amy Rees Anderson

Life has been really crazy lately but what’s crazy is that its not for any of the reasons I would have expected this time of year.
