{"id":7648,"date":"2017-01-10T00:29:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-10T06:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.amyreesanderson.com\/blog\/?p=7648"},"modified":"2017-01-10T00:31:13","modified_gmt":"2017-01-10T06:31:13","slug":"a-lickin-does-a-fellow-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amyreesanderson.com\/blog\/a-lickin-does-a-fellow-good\/","title":{"rendered":"A Lickin\u2019 Does A Fellow Good"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday when we got home from our Hawaii trip we opened a knock at the door to find my mother-in-law and father-in-law who had driven down from Idaho to surprise us with a visit as they wanted to be here for my husband\u2019s birthday tomorrow (Tuesday).\u00a0 One of our favorite activities when our in-laws come in town is to play board games and card games with them. My father-in-law is especially fun to play games with as he always finds \u201ccreative\u201d ways to win\u2026someone observing his creativity may choose to call it \u201ccheating\u201d but at 84 years old he feels he has earned the right to call to express his \u201ccreativity\u201d \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>My father-in-law\u2019s creativity makes it a little tough to beat him at games but I am always determined to try and beat him anyway&#8230;but playing games last night and again tonight I Lost every time\u2026.grrr it was frustrating\u2026.because let&#8217;s face it, no one likes to lose&#8230;but sometimes it is in losing that we learn some of life\u2019s greatest lessons. \u00a0It\u2019s like this poem says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">I&#8217;m not the chap to say that failure&#8217;s sweet,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> Nor tell a chap to laugh when things go wrong;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> I know it hurts to have to take defeat<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> An&#8217; no one likes to lose before a throng;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> It isn&#8217;t very pleasant not to win<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> When you have done the very best you could;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> But if you&#8217;re down, get up an&#8217; buckle in-<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> A lickin&#8217; often does a fellow good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">I&#8217;ve seen some chaps who never knew their power<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> Until somebody knocked &#8217;em to the floor;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> I&#8217;ve known men who discovered in an hour<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> A courage they had never known before,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> I&#8217;ve seen &#8217;em rise from failure to the top<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> By doin&#8217; things they hadn&#8217;t understood<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> Before the day disaster made &#8217;em drop-<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> A lickin&#8217; often does a fellow good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Success is not the teacher, wise an&#8217; true,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> That gruff old failure is, remember you;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> She&#8217;s much too apt to make a fool of you,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> Which isn&#8217;t true of blows that knock you flat.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> Hard knocks are painful things an&#8217; hard to bear,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> An&#8217; most of us would dodge &#8217;em if we could;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> There&#8217;s something mighty broadening in care-<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> A lickin&#8217; often does a fellow good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve all had failures and we&#8217;ve all lost at times we wanted to win&#8230;but when we look back at life we can&#8217;t deny that it&#8217;s the times we took a lickin&#8217;
