And many times I have had to be willing to stand up alone, which is never fun to do. It can feel daunting and even lonely to stand for what’s right when others around you are choosing to sit idly by and either ignore the problem as if it’s not really there, or sometimes they themselves take part in covering things up to keep from having to deal with any unpleasantness. They choose to allow the wrong things to continue to go on rather than having to take a stand and see fixing things through. I guess I just wasn’t raised that way…

I was raised to always stand for what’s right, and to do something about it if I ever become aware that something is being done wrong, no matter what the personal cost was for fixing it may be. I was taught to do what is right regardless of what the consequences may be, because doing what’s right is the thing that matters most. Some days I’ll admit that it would be so much easier to be that person who pretends all is well even when I know that it’s not, but I just can’t do it. I believe too strongly in the importance of integrity and standing true to what I know to be right.

So today when I read this poem it really helped remind me that even when I am facing the most difficult of situations I must be willing to see it through, making sure I either get it fixed myself, or I must report the situation to those with authority who can take charge of getting it fixed, before I can, in good conscious, walk away from it.

See It Through (by Edgar Albert Guest)

When you’re up against a trouble,

Meet it squarely, face to face;

Lift your chin and set your shoulders,

Plant your feet and take a brace.

When it’s vain to try to dodge it,

Do the best that you can do;

You may fail, but you may conquer,

See it through!

Black may be the clouds about you

And your future may seem grim,

But don’t let your nerve desert you;

Keep yourself in fighting trim.

If the worst is bound to happen,

Spite of all that you can do,

Running from it will not save you,

See it through!

Even hope may seem but futile,

When with troubles you’re beset,

But remember you are facing

Just what other men have met.

You may fail, but fall still fighting;

Don’t give up, whate’er you do;

Eyes front, head high to the finish.

See it through!

We all have a choice to either live with integrity or not.
