Procrastination

Okay so today’s tweet is really more of a confessional.  I came home from a long day at work to find my teenage daughter busy at the kitchen table working on what was clearly a huge homework assignment.  She was focused and intense and clearly driven to get the project completed.

I, on the other hand, came home tired from a long day of work at 8pm, knowing that I had to still write my daily blog to my employees as well as needing to prepare a powerpoint presentation for a keynote talk I am giving down at BYU tomorrow morning, and what did I do?  I sat down to watch TV for an hour and I talked to a friend on the phone for a while, and then, when I found myself now totally exhausted and ready for sleep, I thought “oh dang, I still have to prepare my talk to give at BYU tomorrow”…only by the time I said it to myself it was actually the talk I will be giving TODAY because it is now after midnight and I still haven’t done it!

About 10:30pm my daughter came into my room to say goodnight and before I could scold her for being up so late for an assignment I thought she must have due tomorrow, she expressed, “I am so glad I got that project out of the way”.  She went on to say “It’s not actually due for a few weeks, but I wanted to get it out of the way so I won’t have to sit and stress about it getting done.”

How the heck was I supposed to lecture my child when she had just shown an amazing amount of ambition and responsibility compared to her mother, who was being captain procrastinator and when I hadn’t even begun my assignment which was due in the morning?!?!

Yes, tonight was humbling…and a valuable lesson to be reminded of.  It is true that when there is something we need to get done looming out there it will consistently weigh on us until we get it done.

“Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task.” ~William James

Time is precious.  And we can’t ever get it back.  So today’s challenge is to take a look at what you have been putting off in your life….figure out what have you been procrastinating that you really should just get done…THEN DO IT, NOW!

“There are a million ways to lose a work day, but not even a single way to get one back.” ~Tom DeMarco and Timothy Lister

DO IT NOW…You will feel so much better when you do…now I am going to stop writing and start doing my powerpoint for tomorrow’s talk (check that…today’s talk!)!  After all, I have to practice what I just preached right?!??…and it’s the only way I will get any sleep at all tonight :)…

Have a FABULOUS WEDNESDAY!

I find it so ironic that you posted about procrastination today! Last night my best friend and I finally put together an online book club we’ve been planning and thinking about for WEEKS! She and I are some of the worst people when it comes to procrastination and it felt so good to finally get it up and running! Now to get to the other tasks on my list… 😀
