“Don’t Let Behavior of Others Destroy Your Inner Peace” – Dalai Lama

It is a fact of life that we cannot control what other people do.  We can’t make someone else act with integrity, or make someone else do the right thing, and we can’t make someone else be a good person.  All we can really control in life is ourselves. When someone else does something bad or dishonest or unkind we can only control our reaction to it.  And the way we conduct ourselves in tough times is the way we exhibit the person that we are.

Unfortunately we live in a world where there are people who will lash out at others in jealousy or greed or plain old meanness.  And no matter how good a person you are, there will always be those who try to tear you down as best they can.  But always remember that regardless of what anyone else does or says, we can always choose to take the high road – we can always choose to continue to act with integrity and kindness.  And at the end of the day it is taking that high road that will bring us inner peace, even amongst the turmoil that others may try to create.

One thing that helps me most at those times when I have had to deal with someone who is trying to tear me down is to remember that there is only one person we need to be able to please in this life and that is God.  Obviously none of us like to deal with the hurtful behavior of someone who is lashing out at us.  It is heartbreaking when it happens, and I don’t know how anyone could not be hurt or affected by it.  However, I do believe with all my heart that as much as it may cause us to feel bad, it isn’t something we should ever allow to drive how we feel about ourselves.  We should never let our view of ourselves be determined by another person who is lashing out because people aren’t perfect and people aren’t all-knowing – Only God is.  That is what makes him the perfect judge that we can trust implicitly.  That is why he is the perfect person to focus your energy and attention on pleasing, and no one else.   And we are able to control what he thinks of us by the way we act and the integrity we have.  And knowing that gives tremendous peace in a world often filled with chaos.

Today’s reminder is that if we are living our lives in a way that we know God would be proud of us, then nothing that anyone else may do or say can ever change that, and that is something to be happy about.

Have a fantastic day filled with loads of inner peace and happiness!

~Amy

I really liked your post and your perspective. Recently, have been dealing with some disrespectful behavior and your post puts things in perspective. Since you mention about that All Powerful Creator and Almighty, I invite you to read a Book that has provided me a ‘road map’ for my life. It is titled ‘In the Light of Truth’ by Abd-ru-Shin.
Wishing you much peace and joy in life’s journey.

Thank you for reminding me that it is only God I must please. Not only that but when I fail, He still loves me.

Its hard enough to take the high road but having a mentally ill mean daughter makes it very hard to keep the focus on God being the human I am.

Perhaps this is where you miss understand the greater truth about yourself. Yes you are human but this part is really just a shell, a coat of flesh for your real self – your spirit. This is confirmed in a multitude of verses & passages including 1 Cor 6:17, Gal 3:28, Col 3:11, Gal 2:20, 1 Cor 2:16 and more. Starting asking yourself what it means to see and know yourself as spirit, joined with God here and now and you will discover not just an amazing new way of thinking, the greater truth of scripture but also about yourself and about God!!

Actually God is a “person” as is Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit–the three persons of the Holy Trinity! It’s been recognized that way since the early Councils of the Catholic Church.

    Thank you Amy,
I want to apply the above at work as i feel I am unfairly accused and 2 poepl are mot apologizing to me for their behavior.
I am trying to take my focus from them back to myself to empower myself and move on.
That article helps. Yet I still beleive an apology is necessary to work with them. I wonder how to work with them otherwise.

  • Lina says:

    Thank you Amy
I will apply it at work so hopefully i will stop expecting others to have more integrity and apologize to me.

Sometimes you end up saying things that you not supposed to be saying out of anger …and you regret afterwards
